New Years Resolution Update

This post was meant to come at the end of March as an update to this post after 3 months, but I figure that splitting the year into 3 and writing an update at the end of April is almost as good. It’s been 4 months since I thought about the things that I wanted to achieve in the first part of the year, and the whole point of writing them down was so that I felt more accountable for them and to come back and look at how far I’d got with what I wrote later on in the year.

1 – Move House

This one has a well defined success state, and yes, I have moved out of my parent’s house and into a place I’m renting with a couple of mates. Even better, we did manage to get it sorted out within our short timeframe by the end of January, so success all round!

2 – Learn Web Development

I haven’t actually done much towards this, at least not in the way I had originally planned to do at the start of the year. I kept working through the Odin Project for a little bit longer, however I found that it was going in a direction that wasn’t what I was expecting when I started it and wrote the post earlier in the year, at least in terms of the content of the course. I have been working on a couple of personal projects, the coding and templates on this website, as well as some things at work that have been much more fulfilling as a way to work towards learning web development, and I think that this is how I’ll be progressing towards this goal in the future.

3 – Get Fit & Healthy

I’ve got halfway towards this one I think, moving out has meant that I am eating better overall, especially at lunchtime where I’ve been bringing the leftovers from dinner the night before into work rather than buying something. I’m also trying to cut down on the proportion of meat and carbs in my meals, in favor of more fruit and vegetables, partly because meat is so much more expensive, but also because I’m conscious that I don’t get anywhere near 5 portions per day.

I’ve got as far as signing up for the gym as well, although this is where I fall down, as I haven’t actually been yet. That’s the objective for the next couple of months, as well as getting out a bit in the afternoon / evening after work now that we actually have some daylight again.

4 – Get better at guitar

This is the one goal for the first part of my year where I haven’t made deliberate steps to work towards it, and as such is the one where I don’t think I’ve achieved really anything so far. I was hoping that I’d have extra free time due to not commuting and that I’d spend some of that time putting down some more rigorous practice, but that’s not quite what happened. I certainly do have more free time, but I came to the realisation the other week that I was spending a good amount of that just watching stuff on Youtube and iPlayer as a way to pass time. Obviously this isn’t something I really want to be doing, even on the days where I’m super tired and don’t feel like doing anything, and it also makes me feel a bit bad about myself for essentially wasting my own time when I could be doing something much more fun.

As a result, I think I’m going to broaden this goal a bit to simply make better use of my free time, whether that’s playing guitar as I originally planned or something else, like reading books, getting back into sketching or writing more posts for my site, all of which I enjoy a lot. It’s definitely not the case that I’m going to stop watching videos either, there’s a lot of content out there that I do want to see, but I want to avoid that bored state where I’m looking at stuff just to waste time.

Overall I feel like I’ve made good progress towards what I set out to do at the start of the year, and I’m happy with how things are going at the moment. I also think that listing the things that I feel are important to me and thinking about how I’m going to achieve them has worked really well for me. The act of writing something down has always helped me to remember it, and I’ve found the exact same thing here. Since writing the original post at the start of the year I’ve been able to keep my goals in mind and plan out the things I’m doing to help me work towards those without much effort at all, and so it’s something that I’ll definitely continue doing as we go through the year.
